Belarusian Written Language Day
In accordance with Decree No.157 of the President of the Republic of Belarus dated March 26, 1998, On National Holidays, Red-Letter Days and Commemorative Dates in the Republic of Belarus, the Belarusian Written Language Day is annually celebrated in our country on the first Sunday of September.
Celebrations generally take place in cities that are considered to be centres of education, culture and publishing, with rich historical heritage and close links to life and work of famous Belarusian figures of different times.
The Belarusian Written Language Day was celebrated in the following Belarusian cities: Polotsk, Turov, Novogrudok, Nesvizh, Orsha, Pinsk, Zaslavl, Mstislavl, Mir, Kamenets, Postavy, Shklov, Borisov, Smorgon, Khoyniki, Gantsevichi, Glubokoye, Bykhov, Shchuchyn, Rogachev.
In 2018, the celebration called "My little homeland" will take place in Ivanovo, Brest region.
Every year celebrations of the Belarusian Written Language Day are attended by senior Belarusian officials, heads of ministries, literary and cultural figures, scientists, artists, journalists, representatives of embassies accredited in the Republic of Belarus, foreign delegations.
Over the years, the Belarusian Written Language Day has become a truly national holiday, a landmark event in the cultural life of the country. The celebrations are held not only in the capital city, but also throughout the country. They include thematic lessons, lectures, seminars, meetings with scientists, writers, cultural figures, educators.
The Belarusian Written Language Day celebrations involve the following events:
– award ceremony for winners of the rrepublican contest for the best poetry, prose and drama work which was initiated by the public association "the Union of Writers of Belarus", the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Belarus, other concerned parties;
– round table with the participation of foreign poets and writers, organized by the Ministry of Information, the public association "the Union of Writers of Belarus", the editorial and publishing institution "the Publishing House "Zvezda", the publishing house "Mastatskaya Literatura" (Fiction Literature);
– research and practical conference with the participation of representatives of the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences, other research institutions of our country;
– award ceremony for winners of the Republican Сreativity Сompetition for Young Reciters “Living Classics”, aimed at inspiring children and teenagers to read, using the best pieces of the national literature to bring up younger generation, searching and supporting talented youth. The Contest is organized by the Ministry of Information, Ministry of Education, the privately-owned joint-stock company “Stolichnoye Televideniye” (Capital City TV), the public association “the Union of Writers of Belarus”.
As a part of the Belarusian Written Language Day celebrations representatives of creative and scientific intelligentsia, clergy, etc. go on a republican science education expedition called "A Road to Shrines" with the Holy Fire from the Holy Sepulchre. The expedition passes through towns and villages in several regions of the country and ends in the capital of the festival.
The events on the occasion of the Belarusian Written Language Day include the Festival of Books and Press held by the Ministry of Information which features book exhibition pavilions, thematic book shows, demonstration of national and regional print media, trade pavilions and tents. Festival guests get an opportunity to meet with Belarusian writers, employees of publishing houses and print media offices, to enjoy presentations of books and publishing houses, periodicals, as well as performances of various ensembles and Belarusian musicians.
